Orcadian Rhythms
The images were all shot on Orkney in 2024. You can read the full tale of my odyssey in my Orkney image gallery.
Unstan Cairn
Having scrambled in almost on the knees, the chamber engulfs and encloses you. 5,000 years of time press down through the stones. Don't let the gate close. You are alone. Suspended in time and space, in the company of ghosts. Don't let the gate close. You're drawn to the heart to face the veil, the void. History speaks. And you are alone. Don't let the gate close... Are you alone?
Skara Brae
A tour around the busy settlement of Skara Brae, showing an alleyway, an entryway, and a passageway that take us into a home of our ancient forebears. The ebb and flow of community life, staged in re-creation. Sometimes shown in negative view, as a reminder that the site is a projection through a modern lens.
The Ring of Brodgar
Drawing on Celtic symbolism and Norse myth, here the ancient Ring of Brodgar represents order between chaos. The breaking through from, and holding back of, chaos in a land where there can be little shelter. A chanting to the elements, with their deep primordial replies.
The Standing Stones of Stennes
These stones have suffered millennia of 'interventions' - such as Captain Mackay's shenanigans of 1814. The Captain was all "Get off my land" when it came to tourists, so he set about toppling the stones to deter them. Until he was stopped anyway.
